Just don't show up with fluff...show up with purpose.
~ Jennifer Gardella, PhD
Let’s be honest — selfies are not a social media strategy.
You’re showing up, tagging a few people, and calling it marketing. But deep down, you know it is fluff. Honestly, you are just creating noise and playing the “look at me” game.
Here’s what I see all the time:
You go to a networking event, take selfies with the speakers, maybe a friend or two, snap a pic of the room — and then toss it all into one LinkedIn post with a quick “What a great night!” and a few tags. You get some “traction” as far as likes but comments have not created anything of substance and do not generate any conversation.
It feels like content. But it’s not a strategy.
Selfies don’t grow your brand.
They don’t position you as a thought leader
They don’t share how you actually solve problems.
You are just creating noise.
And while people might seem to enjoy being tagged, let’s be honest — most of them are skimming and moving on. You’ve blended into the internet. You aren’t standing out.
There’s a much more powerful way to use social media — especially after an event. Use it to share:
• What inspired you
• What you learned
• How someone’s insights helped you think differently
• What ideas you are taking back to your business
Instead of a selfie with a panelist, what if you shared a quote from their talk — and your take on it?
Imagine if you weren’t in the picture at all?
Instead of a glam shot in the ballroom, what if you wrote 3 lessons you learned and how you’ll apply them to help your clients, yourself as a business leader, your team?
What matters most is that the content adds value that reflects your CONTENT PILLARS.
Fluff vs. Strategy
The internet is already full of fluff. Empty posts. Loud noise.
If you want to stand out, you have to stop adding to it.
Your content needs to help people — deeply and consistently. It should show how you solve real problems, what you believe, and how you help your clients get results.
You need to stop blending in and start strategically showing up.
So if you really want to be a selfie queen then so be it. But you have to work to paired it with a message that resonates.
Tell us what that event meant to you. What’s your unique perspective? What surprised you? What will change in your business or your mindset because of what you experienced?
You don’t need to scrap every personal post — but you do need to anchor it in meaning and strategy. That’s what your audience is craving.
When you only post polished moments and event recaps, your feed starts to feel like a never-ending photo album — not a business. And if you’re a service provider, coach, or consultant, your audience wants more than a highlight reel. They want insight. They want to learn something.
They want to trust you.
Think about what kind of content earns your attention. Is it a quick group shot and a “great night!” caption? Or is it the person who breaks down what they learned and how it applies to the real world?
You can be that person for your audience — starting now.
Every post is a piece of your brand. It’s a signal to potential clients, collaborators, and partners. It tells them whether you’re here to blend in — or to lead.
Are you a person who just shows up, or someone who shows up with value?
If you're tired of posting without results…
If you're ready to get clear on a real strategy that speaks to your ideal clients — not just your friends — let's talk.
